Here's the short answer: staff augmentation adds vetted team members directly into your company — you train them, you manage them, they work in your systems. Traditional outsourcing hands an entire function to a third party, and they manage it their way.
That one difference — who controls the work — explains why so many companies' first attempt at going overseas goes sideways. They picked a model built for a different job.
I've spoken with hundreds of business owners and executives this year, and the conversation usually starts the same way: outsourcing feels broken. We've all called our credit card company or an airline and felt it firsthand. Those experiences make smart people skeptical about the whole category.
But here's what I've also seen: lots of companies have figured out overseas hiring and are seeing massive impact on their businesses. The difference almost always comes down to matching the model to the work.
Staff augmentation means adding pre-screened team members directly to your existing team. They report to your managers, follow your training, use your tools, and are held to your standards. A partner (like Hire Bloom) handles the sourcing, vetting, contracts, and international payroll — you handle everything that makes them yours.
Think of it as hiring, minus the administrative undertaking of doing it across borders yourself.
Traditional outsourcing (the BPO model) means handing a whole function — say, customer service — to an outside company. They hire the people, train the people, and manage the people. You get an SLA and a monthly report.
For high-volume, standardized work, that simplicity is exactly the appeal, and plenty of providers deliver on it. The tradeoff is structural: there's now a layer between you and your customer, and it's a layer you have limited control over. Whether that tradeoff is acceptable depends entirely on the work.

What are the differences between staff augmentation and traditional outsourcing?
Ask yourself one question: can this work go badly without hurting my brand?
If the answer is no — if it's customer-facing, revenue-touching, or reputation-critical — you want people on your team. That's staff augmentation. If it's truly standardized work you never want to think about again, a BPO can be the right call. (We wrote more about making that decision in Is Outsourcing Right for Your Business?)
One more scenario: if you've already found your international hire and just need someone to handle contracts and payroll, that's a third tool entirely — we broke it down in Employer of Record vs. Staff Augmentation.
And whichever route you go, don't lower the bar on talent. Going overseas should never mean less talented people. I've spent years in this industry talking with thousands of job seekers, many with US-level English and serious hard and soft skills. If you're having a different experience, you're fishing in the wrong pond.
Nate Sorensen, COO and co-founder at Banner Pest Control, needed to scale his team but was hesitant about the whole category. He'd been burned before.
With the staff augmentation model, he filled open positions in less than two weeks — with a 3x increase in team member retention.
"I've done a lot of work in the past with offshore people, and it's just kind of comical the contrast in how working with them is different than Bloom. Every time we've done an interviewing round with Bloom, I've had at least two people I wanted to offer the job and had to choose, and sometimes three."
